Before computers were used for graphic design and desktop publishing, designers worked in "camera-ready" mode - that is, assembling photos and lettering on a real artboard and then shooting it with a camera. If you ask anyone in graphic design pre computer, things were far more difficult than today. With the advent of the personal computer, graphic design has come along way. The ease of being able to undo your errors is somewhat more pleasant on a computer than doing it in hard-copy form with bits of paper, tape & glue.
Computers in design gives someone who knows practically nothing about lighting, shooting film, and developing to achieve professional results and be quite happy with the results, thank you very much. Although the learning curve is steep, it is getting easier with image manipulation and font handling software to create brilliant looking packaging. The results are worth the effort.
Artwork related issues are overwhelmingly the number one reason for questions and even complaints when seeing the finished product.
Although we try to get real basic through this tutorial, you should know at a minimum how to run Photoshop, Illustrator EPS and have a good understanding how to create PDF & EPS files. Color handling needs a minimum understanding of what CMYK & Spot colors are.
